Jointly funded research faculty in the WFU Department of Biology study the bamboo-dominated forests of Southwestern Amazonia. The goal of this research is to gain a better understanding of these forests’ carbon dynamics and their effects on Amazonian ecosystems.
These studies employ both remotely-sensed satellite imagery analysis and on-the-ground field-measurements to provide insight into:
- the areal extent of bamboo and trees in the forests of Southeastern Peru
- the landscape density variation bamboo and trees in these forests
- major unknowns surrounding the biomass and carbon-content of these forests
This research holds important implications for the evaluation of carbon mitigation strategies such as the effort to Reduce Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation in Developing countries (REDD+).
