Hydrogen bubbles from water molecules being split by light . . . in the laboratory of CEES postdoc Keerthi Senevirathne. This video shows the action of a standard photocatalyst, TiO2:Pt, when illuminated in a water/methanol mixture. Keerthi and WFU CEES collaborators are synthesizing and investigating other compounds and nanoparticle shapes in the quest for effective sunlight-driven water splitters.

About CEES Research

QUESTIONS WE ASK

Finding the right answer often involves asking the right question. CEES mission is to create sustainable change and the earth system. Our interdisciplinary approach helps us maximize solutions that can come from a wide variety of academic backgrounds. We are determined to finding sustainable answers to the biggest questions facing our environment:

How do we conserve our world’s resources?

How do we save earth’s last best places while ensuring that social and economic value is created? This exploration includes studies of biomes that range from the tropics to the Piedmont to our own campus.

How do we harness and generate alternative energy sources to ensure a sustainable world?
This area of inquiry includes the development of renewable energy sources and the creation of storage capability for effective energy alternatives.

What models are most effective in building societies that are cognizant of their use and relationship to the natural world?
This work analyzes the most effective models for creating responsible social change. It draws on perspectives from the social sciences and the humanities to understand the human condition and creates multiple learning opportunities for the campus community. This area of inquiry includes issues of environmental justice.

What are effective organizational responses by large, medium and small enterprises and by government and non-governmental organizations?
What are the most effective mitigation and adaptation strategies and how do organizations integrate environmental principles and practices into their core strategies? We do research on various types of organizations and write case studies, conduct original research on organizations, and behavioral experiments.

What policy measures generate cost effective incentives for promoting public awareness, public auction, and organizational responses to environmental challenges?
This area directly explores areas of policy development and implementation required for effective change.
